How does the barrel prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the water?

The Great American Rain Barrel has a mosquito screen to prevent insects from breeding inside the barrel. The screen rests below the screw-on, hard top lid. The rain spills  onto the lid and drains thru a series of small holes. Beneath the lid is the mosquito screen which does not allow insects to pass thru. The hard top lid is intended to stay on at all times. Some customers choose to place Polished River Stones on top of lid for both an aesthetic appeal and also to help keep water clean and free of debris.
